Going into Friday’s Altoona West Central Coaches invitational meet, one of the biggest factors wasn’t the tough competition, but rather the weather.
After a wet up north week, the rain and weather cooperated to let Bradford High turn in admirable performances against tough Class AAA schools.
“Overall, it was a very good night with many personal-bests,” BHS girls track and field head coach Larry Stillman said. “The weather held off and the team competed very hard.”
The Lady Owls scored 61 points to finish fourth overall among 13 teams. State College won the team title with 171 points, followed by Hollidaysburg (73.75) and Altoona (67.75).
The core sprinters and hurdlers again led the Lady Owls –– as they have all season.
“Once again, our sprinters and hurdlers –– Ashton McGriff, Regan Johnson, Brooke McGriff and Logan Sunafrank –– had outstanding nights.”
Ashton McGriff won the 200 dash (25.69). She also was third in the 300 hurdles (47.05) and triple jump (35-03.75). Her triple jump makes her just the second jumper in Lady Owl history to go over 35 feet in the event.
Brooke McGriff was second in the high hurdles (15.61) in her second-fastest time ever and placed fourth in the pole vault (9-00). Johnson turned in a fourth-place finish in the 100 dash (12.86), a fifth-place in the long jump (16-07.50) and sixth-place finish in the 200 dash (26.60).
Sunafrank, meanwhile, was seventh in the 300 hurdles (49.84), going under 50 seconds for the first time. She was also 16th in the javelin.
The McGriff sisters teamed with Sunafrank and Mikah Watkins to run the 1600 relay in 4:15.60. The 3200 relay team of Amanda Little, Emily Little, Sunafrank and Morgan Tyger took seventh with a time of 11:01.35.
Others performing on the track for Stillman were Tyger, Watkins and Amanda Little. Tyger ran a season-best time in the 2:40.60 in the 800, while Watkins was 12th in the 400 dash at 1:06.96 and Amanda Little 11th in the 1600 at 6:01.88.
Abby Coffman led the throwers with a seventh-place finish in the shot put with a heave of 32-01.
“Abby Coffman continues to improve every meet in the shot put and went over 32 feet for the first time,” Stillman said.
She was also 12th in the javelin (85-05), while teammate Sophia Oliver took 11th in the discus (71-02). Alexis Brown long jumped 14-10, while Sunafrank threw 71-02 in the javelin.
Taylar Mager was behind Brooke McGriff in the pole vault, jumping 7-06 for 12th place.
“Brooke and Taylar pole vaulted well and continue to improve every time out,” Stillman said.
The Lady Owls finish their dual-meet season on Tuesday at Punxsutawney.
