COUDERSPORT –– Coming into Friday night’s Coudersport Sports Boosters Invitational, Lady Falcon thrower Adrian Page wasn’t sure how the day would play out.
It wasn’t because she was nervous or afraid of the competition. Quite the opposite, really, as it was Page’s home invitational and the junior has been one of District 9’s top throwers for some time now. When there wasn’t off-and-on rain at Coudersport’s CARP Park, there was a light mist falling in the Potter County valley, making for nice running weather, but difficult for field events.
On a practice discus throw, she even slipped and almost fell. To say Page recovered well might be an understatement –– she swept all three throwing events and broke 28-year-old meet record in the process.
“This is not ideal weather by any scope of the imagination,” Page said. “But after that last disc throw, I knew that if I could just block the weather out it wasn’t going to be as bad as I thought. I was just trying to make the most of it.”
She won the event with a throw of 119-09.50, breaking the old meet record of 110-10 from 1989. The rain did subside for her last two throws.
“Thank goodness for that,” Page said. “It did stop raining before I threw the last two.”
Page also won the shot put in 33-11.50 and the javelin with a throw of 102-05. For good measure, she ran the second leg of Coudersport’s winning 1600 relay (4:20.56) with teammates Kiara Perkins, Ally Easton and Dana Dubots.
“It was actually really good conditions to run in because it wasn’t freezing and it wasn’t too hot,” Page said.
Twelve total teams participated in the invitational, including District 9 schools Cameron County, Smethport, Port Allegany, Otto-Eldred, Northern Potter, Oswayo Valley and the hosts as well as Canton, Wellsboro, Williamson, North Penn-Mansfield and Eisenhower.
Elsewhere on the girls’ side, Northern Potter’s distance crew again showed its dominance over the field. The team of Danielle Perry, Amanda Ford, Emma Ford and Rebecca Morgan took the 3200 relay in a meet-record time of 7:23.48. That smashed the old record of 10:19.94 from North Clarion in 1994.
Individually for the Lady Panthers, Perry won the 1600 (5:26.84) and Emma Ford took the 800 (2:28.82).
A pair of Otto-Eldred jumpers also took firsts, with Camryn Thomas winning the high jump (4-11) and Tiffany Bair winning the long jump (16-00). Perkins won the triple jump (34-10.50), Port Allegany’s Mauley Fox won the pole vault (9-00) and Oswayo Valley’s team of Shayla Bickel, McKenzie Gross, Madison Miller and Sara McKean won the 400 relay (53.27).
The Smethport boys team also used its distance squad to take home four wins, while Coudersport’s Michael Kane continued to be a force in the area in the long and triple jumps.
The Hubbers team of Darion Gregory, Justin Tanner, Eric Szarowicz and Christian Tanner won the 3200 relay in 8:46.50, while Christian Tanner doubled with wins in the 1600 (4:41.93) and 800 (2:03.56).
The performances were expected by Christian Tanner, who said he was hoping for a good night, weather-depending.
“Pretty good today,” he said. “I tried a new method in the mile by pushing myself, so it worked out pretty well doing different things than I’m used to. In the 800, it was my last event, so I just went out there and tried to kill it the best I could.”
Gregory also won the 3200 (10:32.92) for the Hubbers, who have their eyes set on the district meet two weeks away on May 19 and beyond.
“Trying to go (to states) and make it as our 3200 relay team,” Christian Tanner said. “Nobody gets nervous, you’re with your team. It makes it a fun meet for everybody and you work together.”
Kane won both the long (20-02.50) and triple (40-11) jumps for Coudersport. His teammate Luke Barshinger added a first in the shot put (44-04.50).
Other area athletes placing first in their events were Port Allegany’s Trey Stiles in the pole vault (11-03) and Bryce Baker in the 200 (23.67). Otto-Eldred’s Brady Valerius won the 100 dash in 11.91.
