SMETHPORT — Smethport Borough Council adopted a resolution Monday supporting the annual Wheel Around the Hub bicycle race that is slated for Sept. 16.
Also billed as “The Great PA Wilds Cycling Race,” organized by the Smethport Fire Department, the event will form on West Main Street at the courthouse and follow a 53-mile course on historic U.S. Route 6 in the borough and other routes in Keating Township.
In another vote, council accepted the low bid of $3,960 from Tim Hahn to pave the field house restroom at the former McCoy Stadium. Dean Fitzsimmons, the only other bidder, submitted a quote of $5,100.
Following an executive session that lasted approximately 41 minutes, council voted to hire five summer employees, several of whom will begin working at different times, depending on their college or high school vacations.
Councilman Ryan Yingling said the parks committee has met with several coaches to discuss improvements at the baseball field at George Murray Stadium. “The field is still playable, but still needs improvements,” said Yingling.
In another matter, Yingling noted that the lights installed in Hamlin Lake Park have been very effective in reducing the number of geese there. Numbers are down substantially from last year due to the lighting.
The borough will continue to collect bags of grass clippings on Tuesdays, but the per bag limit is 40 pounds.
