TRAIN WRECK: We have some bits and pieces to share about the train wreck photo from the April 20 column.
Several people notified us to let us know it was an accident of the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railway.
John Cherry of Johnsonburg said the accident happened on Kendall Avenue in Bradford.
One reader wrote, “With regards to ’Round the Square of April 20 and the train wreck photo, the particulars of that accident are as follows.
“On Sept. 13, 1920, shortly after 5 p.m., in East Bradford, PA, a northbound train backed onto the southbound track to allow another northbound train to pass (the 5:05 out of Bradford). Even though standard rail operating warnings were employed, the southbound train ran the warnings and struck the northbound train.
“Fortunately, no serious injuries were incurred; however, the property damages exceeded $20,000.00.”
Our readers found these details on Page 81 of the book “Train Wrecks & Disasters” by William Fries. The book found the information in “The Salamanca Republican Press.”
Flo Carter of the McKean County Historical Society noted that the society has a picture from the wreck, too.
A photo also appeared on Page 211 of the book “Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railway” by the late Paul Pietrak, another reader told us.
“The photo is from the collection of Thomas Barber,” he told us.
The reader recommended several sources for rail history including the Salamanca (N.Y.) Rail Museum; the Pittsburg, Shawmut & Northern Railroad Historical Society in Angelica, N.Y.; or the Western New York Railway Historical Society.
HUMMINGBIRDS: We got a response about the hummingbirds inquiry we had this week from someone who hasn’t been seeing hummingbirds this year.
“They usually come back around Mother’s Day,” our caller said.
Mother’s Day is in about 2 ½ weeks, so the little birds should be returning soon.
