The spring cleanup in downtown Bradford, held Saturday in honor of Earth Day, had 43 volunteers participating, and went well despite the chilly weather, said Main Street Manager Chelsea Schwab.
The day began at 9 a.m. with the Bradford City Firefighters hosing down the streets and Veterans Square.
“This was an enormous help, as the biggest issue for our downtown is cigarette butt litter,” Schwab said. “To wash them away saves our volunteers from having to pick up the hundreds of butts on the sidewalks. It also helps by washing away the built up road salt and sand that would take our business owners hours upon hours to sweep up.”
Volunteers began at 10 a.m. Most of the volunteers came from local organizations with Cub Scout Pack 412 bringing the most volunteers, 17 total, and winning a $100 donation.
In addition to the cleanup, other efforts are underway to beautify the downtown.
Fundraising for the flower barrels and baskets that line Main Street and Boylston Street is ongoing through the Downtown Bradford Revitalization Corp. Anyone wishing to contribute to the flowers can make a donation to DBRC P.O. Box 490 Bradford, Pa. 16701
Next month, the flower barrels on Main Street will be planted. Anyone interested in assisting with the barrels on planting day or adopting a barrel for the summer can contact the Main Street Manager.
