SMETHPORT — A Kane man is in McKean County Jail after allegedly trying to break into a Wetmore Township home early Saturday morning.
According to court records, David Jacob Carley, 23, of 628 N. Fraley St., tried to get into 374 Spring St. Kane-based state police were dispatched at 4:32 a.m., where they met with Kane Borough Police who were already there.
When police located Carley — who allegedly smelled like alcohol — they asked him questions trying to piece together what happened. He allegedly told them that he both had just left his home and that he was on his way home. When asked how he had gotten scrapes on his forehead, “he related that he clicks his forehead together. When told that none of what he said made any sense, he did not respond,” court records read.
Court records stated that a Spring Street woman was sitting in her living room at the above address when she heard someone trying to get in through the door, so she woke her 16-year-old son. She and her son went back downstairs and saw a man — later identified as Carley — standing at the door looking in the window and trying to open the door. The pair went back upstairs to hide with her children until police arrived.
When police took Carley into custody, they allegedly found that he possessed a black Kershaw knife that opens with a button and a vape pipe containing marijuana. Also found in his pocket was a piece of a cardboard coaster — and another piece of the coaster was found by the door he was trying to enter, court records stated.
Carley was arraigned before District Judge William Todd on charges of criminal attempted burglary, a first-degree felony; criminal attempted criminal trespassing, a third-degree felony; possession of an offensive weapon, a first-degree misdemeanor; possession of a small amount of marijuana for personal use and possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanors; and criminal mischief and public drunkenness, summaries, according to court records.
He was committed to jail in lieu of $30,000 bail, and he is scheduled to appear in Central Court on Thursday.
