SMETHPORT — A Port Allegany man was charged with fleeing police Monday while he was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to court records, at 9:40 p.m. Monday, a Smethport Borough police officer started to follow a blue Ford F-150 driven by Adam W. Reinard, 49, of 3412 Route 155, after he noticed it was having a difficult time making the curve on West Main Street.
The officer watched as the truck “was weaving all over the eastbound lane and crossing the double yellow line,” court records read.
The officer activated his siren and emergency lights at the intersection of East Water Street and U.S.Route 6, signaling to Reinard that he was to pull over, but Reinard allegedly continued traveling at a high rate of speed through East Smethport, passing a car in the no-passing zone and continuing toward Port Allegany.
About halfway up Bush Hill, Reinard’s truck began to slow down, and he pulled off in the grass in front of a residence. As an officer removed Reinard from his car, he noticed a strong smell of alcohol and an unopened can of beer in the cupholder. Reinard allegedly admitted that he drank alcohol that night, according to court records.
Reinard would not consent to a sobriety test, saying, “I had back surgery not long ago, I would be screwed anyway,” court records read; however, he did consent to a blood draw at Bradford Regional Medical Center.
Reinard was released on unsecured bail, and he is scheduled to appear in Central Court on April 27.
Reinard was arraigned before District Judge William Todd on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, a third-degree felony; driving under the influence of alcohol, a misdemeanor; and summary charges of passing when prohibited, reckless driving, careless driving and three counts of disregarding traffic lanes, court records stated.
