As part of Choose Privacy Week, May 1-7, Tony High of Omnis Technologies will hold a seminar on how to maintain your privacy and avoid being catfished from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. May 2 at the Bradford Area Public Library.
Tony High, an IT technician with Omnis Technologies, will provide answers to questions like how much information should one share on the internet. High has nearly 10 years of experience in the computer industry as an IT consultant with a background in IT security.
Statistically, close to 100 million additional Americans have their personal identifying information placed at risk of identity theft each year when records maintained in government and corporate databases are lost or stolen. Google and the Cloud have been hacked. Catfishing is so widespread that there is a show on MTV, Catfished, devoted to this topic. While there is no guarantee that one can fully protect and safely store information on the Internet, High will teach how we can protect one’s privacy.
Catfishing means to create a false media profile or hijacking someone else’s profile to lure others into an online relationship. A catfish may act deceptively to take the victim’s money, emotionally hurt them, and damage their reputations and relationships. He will explain how people can avoid being catfished.
High’s seminar will cover two party-verification, how to verify who you are communicating with on the Internet and other ways to protect information. Contact the Bradford Area Public Library to register at (814) 362-6527 or register at the circulation desk. The event is free and open to the public.
