ENOLA — Bradford Township officials this weekend will receive statewide recognition for the new Lang Maid Lane bridge put in last year.
The local municipality will be given a road and bridge safety improvement award at the 95th annual Educational Conference and Trade Show of the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors, scheduled on April 23-26 at the Hershey Lodge.
Bradford Township Supervisor Chairman Jim Erwin called the award a pleasant surprise.
On Sunday, PSATS, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Pennsylvania Highway Information Association will present the Road and Bridge Safety Improvement awards.
The township used its own workers and equipment to complete the bridge project over a two-month period in 2016. The project cost about $420,000, a savings of $400,000, Erwin said.
“Everyone so far likes the bridge. And it should last for a long time,” he said, adding that the bridge shouldn’t need anything done to it for 50 to 60 years. The old bridge was down to one lane, and the structure had fractured abutments.
The bridge had been deemed a critical project with the Bradford Manor located nearby; the emergency responders needed to have easy access to the nursing home, Erwin said.
The conference and trade show will also include Sen. Scott Wagner, Rep. Kate Harper, and several state cabinet-level officials.
For four days, township officials from throughout the state will share how to run their municipalities more efficiently and cost-effectively, listen to speakers and adopt resolutions that will guide the Association in its legislative endeavors in Harrisburg.
The other Road and Bridge Safety Improvement Award is going to Derry Township, Dauphin County.
The Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors represents 1,454 townships of the second class, which covers 95 percent of Pennsylvania’s land mass.
