Andy Carlson has only coached five games for Bradford this year, but Tuesday’s 6-4 win over Oswayo Valley (4-2) is without a doubt the biggest of his brief tenure.
“Any time you can beat a team that won 20 games last year and is returning a lot of talent like they are, you’re happy about it,” Carlson said. “We played a cleaner game and we were able to pull out the win.”
The Owls (2-3) got two big insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning that proved enough to hold off two seventh-inning runs from the Green Wave. Tom Guay knocked in pinch-hit RBI double, which Patrick Caskey followed up with a sacrifice RBI.
Hunter Gray opened the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the third, his first-ever home run at any level according to coach Carlson. Gray would also add a single.
Kyle Kirk went five-plus innings on the mound, striking out four and walking two.
“He’s doing a heck of a job,” Carlson said about the senior. “He battled and gave us five five and a third innings against a very good team. He gave us a good chance to win.”
Kirk also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Garret Babcock had the big bat for Oswayo Valley, launching a two-run homer in the sixth inning and finishing 3-for-4 with four RBI. Gage Babcock and Camden Graves both finished with two base hits for the Green Wave.
The Owls will visit DuBois on Thursday.
Otto-Eldred 13, Archbishop Walsh 0, 5 innings
DUKE CENTER — Otto-Eldred scored nine runs in the second inning and went on to post a five-inning 13-0 victory over Archbishop Walsh in high school baseball action on Tuesday.
Five pitchers – Chase Sebastian, Sawyer Drummond, Seth Drummond, Andrew Sheeler and Cameron Magee – worked one inning each. As a group they limited the Eagles to three hits and combined for 11 strikeouts.
The Terrors (6-1) connected for 12 hits led by 2-for-3 performances at the plate from Sheeler (two RBI), Sawyer Drummond (three RBI), Connelly (RBI) and Chase (RBI).
Otto-Eldred returns to action Friday at home with Smethport.
Elk Catholic 11, Kane 0, five innings
KANE — Jordan Nasoni pitched a two-hitter to lead Elk County Catholic to a five-inning victory over Kane in their high school baseball game Tuesday.
Nasoni fanned seven batters and did not give up a walk.
He was backed by a 12-hit attack that included Jared Braun’s triple, which was the only extra base hit in the game. The Crusaders left 11 men on base.
ECCH scored three runs in the first inning and then blew the game open with a six-run fourth frame.
Kane sent three pitchers to the mound. Starter Cyrus Novosel worked three innings and took the loss, followed by Ty Stahli and Bailey Arthurs, each on the hill for one inning.
Johnsonburg 4, Coudersport 1
JOHNSONBURG — It was a game of missed opportunities for the Falcons, as they dropped a close game on the road.
Johnny Mitchell (2-for-4, two RBI) and Justin Kasmierski (2-for-3, one RBI) powered the Rams’ offense, who used a three-run second inning to establish a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Kasmierski had a solid game on the mound, going six-plus innings, striking out five and walking five.
Kullen Crosby and Kolby VanWhy both notched doubles for Coudersport, which had a couple of bases-loaded opportunities that it couldn’t capitalize on.
“We left a lot of scoring opportunities out on the bases today,” Coudy coach Doug McClintic said. “We also walked too many guys on the other end.”
Blake Burgett, Elliott Hite, and VanWhy were the pitchers for the Falcons combining for five strikeouts and eight walks.
Coudersport will visit Northern Potter on Friday.
