EMPORIUM — A contest that featured 23 combined runs was decided by a late swinging bunt.
Cameron County’s Alex Umble did just that with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth to give the Red Raiders (2-2) a 12-11 victory over Smethport (0-2) in Northern Allegheny league baseball action Wednesday.
“He was able to beat the throw at first and that allowed the winning run to come in,” Cameron County coach James Cooney said.
Bryce Bauer had a big game at the plate for the Red Raiders, crushing a three-run homer in the first and finishing the day with three hits and four RBI. Ty Bauer also went 3-for-4 with four RBI.
Smethport was down 11-5 late in the game, but came up with six runs in the sixth frame to tie it up. But winning pitcher Derek Rieder struck out six in just two innings of work to seal the deal out of the bullpen.
“The kids fought back hard and they were able to get the victory,” Cooney said.
Bailey Kinner led the Hubbers with three RBI on a 1-for-4 performance.
Cameron County travels to Brockway today.
Coudersport 17, Port Allegany 0, three innings
PORT ALLEGANY — Ten Coudersport runs crossed the plate in the third inning to propel the Falcons (3-3) to a dominant 17-0 win over the Gators (0-3).
Kullen Crosby, Kolby VanWhy, and Hunter Redmond, among others, all notched extra-base hits for the Falcons, who also scored six runs in the second inning.
Kullen Crosby got the win on the mound, striking out six and walking just one in three innings.
Tyler Lashway had Port Allegany’s only two hits on the day.
