The Main Street Cleanup day has been scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon April 22, with registration to be held at Veterans’ Square.
Volunteers, either individually or in groups, are needed to help with the event, which is being held to coincide with the statewide Great American Cleanup of PA.
“Winter has taken a toll on our downtown,” Main Street manager Chelsea Schwab said, “but a little TLC will have Main Street in top shape for the upcoming spring and summer events. This cleanup is a great opportunity for groups to earn some service hours, and comes with a bonus; we will be awarding the group with the most volunteers $100 towards their group or program.”
Schwab said the project is a good opportunity for scout troops, youth clubs “or any program that could use a little extra funding and has an enthusiastic group who cares about our community.”
Cleanup activities scheduled throughout the day include hosing down Main Street sidewalks, which will be done by the Bradford City Fire Department, street sweeping, picking up trash and cleaning up and weeding the flower beds along Main Street and in Veteran’s Square.
“I would like to encourage the downtown businesses to join us by cleaning up the areas around their storefronts,” Schwab said, “Getting this jumpstart on cleaning will not only help our volunteers, but it also makes keeping the downtown clean throughout the summer much more manageable if everyone takes care of their own area.”
Fundraising through the Downtown Bradford Revitalization Corp. is still in progress to raise money for the hanging baskets and flower barrels that adorn the historic district every summer. “People in the community have been tremendously supportive of both the cleanup and the flowers,” Schwab said. “It is wonderful to see so many people work together to make a difference.
