The Pitt-Bradford baseball team split an AMCC doubleheader with Pitt-Greensburg Sunday, cruising to a 10-3 victory in game one before letting an early lead slip away in game two and falling 11-8.
Ryan Boyer earned his second straight win by scattering four hits and two runs over six innings pitched in the opening contest. He struck out seven and worked around a season-high seven walks.
The Panthers staked Boyer to an early lead, blitzing Pitt-Greensburg starter Billy Elliott for six runs, chasing the right-hander from the contest after just two-thirds of an inning. Dalton Renn and Brody Wood each had RBI singles in the frame, and Austin Parent and Samuel Dreistadt added two-run base hits.
Pitt-Bradford scored a run in the third on Tyler Hoops’ sacrifice fly, and the Panthers tacked on three more in the sixth. Every Panther batter recorded a hit but one, and the Blue and Gold outhit the Bobcats 12-5.
Hoops finished 3-3 with a pair of runs scored, and Parent totaled three RBIs. Nate Renick pitched the seventh inning, surrendering a RBI groundout.
The Panthers jumped ahead 6-0 after two innings in the nightcap but faltered late, as Pitt-Greensburg scored eight runs over a span of four innings to deal Pitt-Bradford its first conference loss.
Pitt-Greensburg finished with 19 total hits, and Andrew Bacha and Abe Frech combined to give up six runs in relief. Starter Matthew Hogue gave up six runs, five earned, on 12 hits over six innings.
Pitt-Bradford moves to 8-14 on the season and 3-1 in the AMCC. The Panthers travel to Penn State Behrend Wednesday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
Men’s tennis drops matches
The Pitt-Bradford men’s tennis team dropped a pair of AMCC matches this weekend, falling 9-0 to both Penn State Behrend and Franciscan.
Against Penn State Behrend, the doubles teams of Matt Dennis and Jacob Domes and Andrew Hoyt and Alex Jadlowiec each lost 8-1. John Parsell and and Tyler Richmond were edged 8-5.
In singles action, Dennis, Richmond, Hoyt and Jadlowiec all lost their flights 6-0, 6-0. Domes suffered a 6-0, 6-1 setback, and Drew Patla fell 6-1, 6-0.
Against Franciscan, Domes and Richmond were defeated 8-2, and Dennis and Jadlowiec lost 8-1. The duo of Parsell and Hoyt were clipped 9-8, losing the tiebreaker 7-2.
Richmond, Dennis and Jadlowiec suffered straight set defeats in singles play (6-0, 6-0), and Hoyt was turned back 6-0, 6-2. Parsell lost 6-2, 6-1, and Patla fell 6-2, 6-4.
Pitt-Bradford drops to 2-8 on the season and 1-4 in the AMCC.
Panthers suffer a pair of close losses to Pitt-Greensburg
GREENSBURG ––The Pitt-Bradford softball team dropped its second straight AMCC series Sunday, losing a pair of one-run games to Pitt-Greensburg. The Bobcats edged the Panthers 4-3 in the game one and erased a seven-run deficit in game two to stun Pitt-Bradford, 9-8.
Pitt-Greensburg’s Aubrey Platek delivered the decisive blow in the opener, a three-run home run in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie.
Madison East and Lindsey Hull cut the deficit to 4-3 with RBI doubles in the sixth, yet the Bobcats’ Jaimie Schleicher rebounded to force Jenna Fellow’s into an inning-ending groundout. Pitt-Bradford went 1-2-3 in the seventh to suffer its fifth one-run loss of the season.
Morgan Bellush suffered the defeat in the circle, allowing four runs on seven hits in a complete-game effort. She struck out two and did not walk a batter. East, who had a solo home run in the third inning to tie the game at one, led the Panthers with two hits and two RBIs.
Pitt-Bradford jumped out to an 8-1 lead in game two but could not hold on, as the Bobcats stormed back, eventually winning on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Panthers used a six-run second to build their lead, yet would fail to plate another runner over the final five innings. Pitt-Greensburg scored in every frame but one, and a three-run sixth tied the game at eight runs apiece.
The two teams combined for 35 total hits and seven errors. Maddy Hillery and Betty Fratercangelo each had three hits apiece for Pitt-Bradford, and Melissa Nye and Hull both drove in a pair of runs.
Cassidy Lewis was charged with the loss, allowing the game-winning run. She relieved Liz Dzurisin, who yielded eight runs on 15 hits in 5.1 innings pitched.
Pitt-Bradford drops to 6-19 on the season and 1-7 in the AMCC. The Panthers will look to bounce back Monday when they host Grove City at 3 p.m.
