SEE AMERICA: Donald Neal of Bradford shared this ode to small town America.
“See America”
I have seen the snow capped mountains,
And marveled at the forests of green.
I have seen the blue waters of the lakes,
And the beauty of the desert so serene.
When you travel the interstate highways,
America you cannot see.
You must travel the back roads to villages,
To see America the way it should be.
Once off those high speed freeways,
In the plains in our midwest.
You will see where our food is grown,
And American farmers grow the best.
And in the small town there is a general store,
Where almost anything can be bought.
And the town hall and court house,
The school house where the children are taught.
In front of the court house is a white flag pole,
Where our flag, Old Glory, is flown.
This is the America you can see,
In the streets of an American small town.
And as you travel throughout America,
The National Parks you must see.
From Acadia to Channel Islands,
And Yellowstone, and Yosemite.
America is a beautiful land,
And for our freedom many young men have died.
In lands so very far away,
So our freedom we won’t be denied.
To honor those who have gone before,
A flag will be placed on their grave.
America is truly the Land of The Free,
But mostly The Land of The Brave.
So get off that interstate highway,
Let the back roads be your domain.
Just remember you have nothing to lose,
But there is so much to gain.
