KANE — This month an essay competition will be the main event for the National Library Week observance at Friends’ Memorial Public Library.
This contest is open to all Kane area students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade, and awards will be presented to the winners and honorable mentions at an awards reception on April 27. The first place and honorable mention prizes will range from $20 to $100.
Students who enter an essay may write about their school library, Friends’ Memorial Public Library or any other library that they have enjoyed. The topics for the essays according to grade levels are kindergarten-second grade, “My Library is a Happy Place”; third-fifth grades, “I Go to the Library Because”; six-eighth grades, “We Need Libraries Because”; ninth-12th grades, “Libraries, Democracy and the First Amendment.”
The topic, “Libraries Change Lives,” may be substituted for any of the above topics. Poems, in addition to essays, are considered acceptable statements.
Participants must, in 300 words or less, write a statement on one of the above topics according to the appropriate grade level. All entries must be hand printed or hand written legibly.
All entries must be submitted to Cindy Parker, library director, by 5 p.m. April 19. Essays must include the entrant’s name, address, telephone number, age, name of school and grade.
