WEEDVILLE — A home 71 Garfield St., Jay Township was destroyed by fire Saturday evening.
“No human life was lost,” said Chief Richard Krulia Sr. of the Jay Township Volunteer Fire Department, but he added, “They lost two dogs and a cat. They perished inside.”
Firefighters were called at 4:47 p.m. Saturday, and they remained on scene fighting the fire for about 3 ½ hours, said Krulia. In addition to the Jay Township crew, firefighters from Fox Township and St. Marys in Elk County and Penfield in Clearfield County responded, bringing between 50 and 60 firefighters.
“It was knocked down relatively quickly,” Krulia said of the blaze. “We had a good water supply. Everything worked out well.”
However, the two-story home was fully involved and is not livable.
“The structure itself is standing, but it’s pretty well gutted,” Krulia explained.
“The firemen did a good job knocking the fire down, he said, adding that none of the nearby homes were damaged because the blaze was well-contained. However, firefighters were still called out again about 1:45 a.m. Sunday after a neighbor saw a flame upstairs.
“We got called out early this morning for a rekindled,” Krulia explained.
A fire marshal from the Punxsutawney-based state police met with firefighters Sunday morning, and the fire was determined to be accidental in nature, according to Krulia.
The Salvation Army helped at the scene by bringing a food wagon.
He noted that the family has family in the area to help and declined assistance from the American Red Cross.
“She did have insurance on the residence,” Krulia added.
