WINEMAKING: Pennsylvania has developed quite a winemaking industry.
Learn more about the making of wine in the commonwealth in an upcoming episode of Penn State University’s public television show “Digging Deeper.”
In “Digging Deeper: Winemaking,” two experts from Penn State will discuss the topic with university President Eric J. Barron. The program will air at 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday on WPSU-TV.
“Michaela Centinari, assistant professor of viticulture, and Ryan Elias, associate professor of food science from Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences, will join Braron as the group discusses the uniqueness of Pennsylvania wines, the challenges facing state winemakers and grape growers, and the process of winemaking,” the university reported. “According to the National Association of American Wineries, Pennsylvania is the fourth-largest wine-producing state and has the seventh-most wineries in the country.”
ICE CREAM: Speaking of Pennsylvania-made treats, Penn State’s Berkey Creamery is in the middle of a Creamery Flavor Madness contest — “the online tournament to crown the most popular flavor.”
You have until Sunday to vote in Round 2 — the “Elite Ate.” Flavors still in the running are Cookies-n-Cream versus Keeney Beany Chocolate, Peanut Butter Swirl versus Bittersweet Mint, Death by Chocolate versus Chocolate and Peachy Paterno versus Choc Chip Cookie Dough.
A press release on the contest indicated the shop hopes to make the contest a March tradition.
The winners from this round will be announced Sunday and go on to Round 3 — the Flavorful Four.
The two finalists from that round will be announced April 3, with the winner from the Tasty Two championship to be announced April 10.
Anyone who signs up to vote will be eligible to win a free shipment of ice cream. There will be a discount on online orders of the winning flavor April 11-14.
Already eliminated from the running were Vanilla, Strawberry, Coconut Chip, Alumni Swirl, Butter Pecan, Black Raspberry Frozen Yogurt, Raspberry Sherbet and WPSU Coffee Break.
The first Creamery at Penn State opened 152 years in the “College Barns.” It helps to support the Department of Food Science.
