Mother Nature strikes again.
After a considerably mild winter sports season, impending weather and Gov. Tom Wolf’s state of emergency travel restrictions have caused the PIAA to postpone second-round basketball state playoff games and the state swimming championships.
Wolf on Monday barred empty trailers, buses, RVs and motorcycles from all expressways and interstates east of Interstate 99 until Tuesday evening.
“Due to the impending inclement weather forecast and the Governor’s announcement of a state of emergency which includes travel restrictions” the competitions will be moved, the PIAA said in a Monday afternoon media release.
All Tuesday and Wednesday state-playoff basketball games have been moved to Thursday, with quarterfinal matchups set for Saturday. No games will be played Friday.
Among area teams, Elk Catholic and Johnsonburg were set to play in a Class A boys basketball doubleheader Tuesday night at DuBois High School. Those two games have since been moved to Clearfield High School on Thursday, with Johnsonburg tipping off against Saltsburg at 6 p.m. and the Crusaders’ matchup with Williamsburg to follow at 7:30.
The Otto-Eldred girls and Coudersport boys basketball teams are still set to play in a doubleheader at DuBois High School. The Lady Terrors’ start at 6 p.m. against Kennedy Catholic on Thursday with Coudersport and Greensburg Central Catholic afterward.
Ridgway and Berlin Brothersvalley now play their boys Class AA second round game Thursday at Altoona High School at 7:30 p.m.
The Class AA swimming championships are not going to be contested Thursday and Friday at Bucknell University, while Class AAA will compete on Saturday and Sunday. The diving championships for are set for Saturday (AA) and Sunday (AAA).
