CALENDAR: Clayton Vecellio of Lewis Run has devised a new way to organize the calendar.
He’s already taken his idea for the “Vecellio Earth Calendar” into the community, hoping he’ll get folks on board with his more orderly system. Last week, he shared his idea at the Greater Bradford Senior Activity Center and with the members of the St. Francis of Assisi 50+ Club.
It’s going to take us a couple of days to share the whole thing.
As Clayton explains, “A calendar is simply a system of reckoning time.
“There have been many different forms and several are still in use. Both scientists and business people have for many years claimed that it is cumbersome and poorly adapted to the needs of this strenuous age.
“This is because there is so little regularity in its construction. The months are uneven in length. Not one of them contains any given number of complete weeks. Also, one month has an additional day added every four years.
“Many people suppose the months are regulated by changes of the moon or by movement of some of the planets, but this is a mistake. The use of lunar months was discontinued even before our present calendar came into use. Neither is the length of the months governed by any of nature’s laws; hence, there is no good reason why they cannot be changed as the welfare of society may require.
“Down through the ages man has tried to make adjustments to the solar calendar invented by the Egyptians in 4236 B.C. Such historical heavyweights as Moses, Julius Caesar and Pope Gregory XIII all made minor changes, but the calendar we use today is virtually identical to the one used by the pharaohs 23 centuries ago.
“The advantages of this simplified calendar cannot be overly estimated. The savings of time and mental effort in making calculations for the future would be beyond all comprehension.
“All religious, national, international, political, social and any other organization will set a definite date of their liking and it will remain on the same date on the calendar in all future years.
We’ll tell you about what his calendar looks like on Wednesday.
