PLANTING: After reading Friday’s column, Bob Rusiewski of St. Marys updated us on how some of his vegetables grew in 2016 and shared a little of his vegetable growing plans for 2017.
Bob writes, “I found today’s ‘Round The Square article interesting about gardens, bulbs and such. Last year if you recall, I mentioned planting spinach and onions on Leap Day (Feb. 29) for the first time ever (in 40 years of gardening) that early.
“I enjoyed the results of both on May 11, 2016 and that was the earliest I ever had home grown onions or spinach ready for eating in St. Marys,” he reports.
“This year I did plant 250 onion sets on Tuesday February 21, and some spinach and snap peas the next day February 22, even earlier than last year. I am hoping the groundhog will not be mad at me and eat my garden for disagreeing with his forecast on February 2 as I think winter’s end is near.
“Perhaps I’ll be tasting the results around Cinco de Mayo this year? For ten bucks, it’s better odds than a lottery ticket!”
And fresh grown snap peas are a pretty awesome reward!
