A Rixford couple was charged Friday on gun-related charges.
William Tipton, 50, and Julie Tipton, 35, both of 11 Maple St., are facing charges from the same incident, police said.
Court records said, in September, police were dispatched to the Tiptons’ residence. While police were there, William Tipton went outside the home with a handgun and allowed his 6-year-old child to shoot it toward the woods at the rear of the house. The child did not have eye or ear protection on, police said.
William Tipton apologized to the officer, and said he wasn’t supposed to have access to firearms because he was a prior felon. He told police the handgun and another gun belonged to his wife, Julie, and they needed the guns for protection from their son, Skye Tipton, and his friends, court records read.
William Tipton was charged with two counts of possession of firearms by a prior felon, second-degree felonies. He was arraigned Saturday and committed to jail in lieu of $20,000 bail. Julie Tipton was charged with two counts of knowingly allowing a prior felon to have access to a firearm, both first-degree misdemeanors. She was arraigned Saturday and has been released after posting $10,000 monetary bail.
Both are scheduled for Central Court on Thursday.
