RESIST: After the story of Sophie Scholl appeared in Wednesday’s column, we had three people contact us to let us know an area resident recently published a book about Hans and Sophie Scholl.
“I am so happy to see people like Tim Vecellio remember the Scholls,” said World War II Museum Director SFC Steven G. Appleby, U.S. Army retired.
“In a world where our young people know Kanye, LeBron, Beyonce, Snoop Dogg, the Kardashians, etc., we at the Eldred World War II Museum try to teach them about the Scholls, Bonhoeffer, Stauffenberg and other true role models,” said Steve.
“We are also honored to offer a book in our gift shop by a young local author on the subject of the White Rose called “Resist.” Emily Ann Putzke of Allegany, N.Y., has written an excellent historical novel about this group that is both sad and inspiring that I recommend to all who visit.
“I am also happy to see The Era highlight days of importance and not only honor their memory but teach the lesson of sacrifice and courage as their legacy.
“We will be hosting a book signing with Emily and will soon announce the date and details of the event,” Steve said. “It is so important to show our youth these shining examples of light amidst all that darkness.”
Another man called to let us know he purchased a copy of “Resist” after meeting author Putzke at a recent book signing at Rock City Park. “She’s just a 21-year-old whippersnapper,” our caller noted.
We found out she has a blog about writing, which can be found at www.authoremilyannputzke.com for anyone interested in learning more.
