When Jacqueline Canter served a stint as a substitute superintendent for the DuBois Area School District in 2016, she found being in such a role to her liking.
Less than a year later, her dream of a permanent position will come true as she assumes the duties of superintendent of Coudersport Area School District. She said she sees Coudersport’s demographics as appealing.
“Coudersport is God’s Country, that’s what we say down here (in DuBois). It’s beautiful,” said Canter, who is currently the director of personnel and student services at DuBois Area School District, a position she has held for about two months.
Her salary at Potter County’s largest school district will be $105,000 for three years, plus the remainder of 2016-17 school year. She will succeed acting superintendent Steve Mongillo, who is also the high school principal. He replaced Alanna Huck as Coudersport’s superintendent; she became the superintendent at Galeton Area School District.
“My first plan is to learn about the people of the community and the students,” Canter said. “Being that I am not from there, that has to be my Number 1 priority.”
She said she is also hoping to build on the strong leadership that exists at the Coudersport district and continue building strong leaders.
Previously, she served as the director of assessment and student services for more than 10 years, substitute superintendent for six months and high school mathematics teachers for one year, all in the DuBois Area School District, according to her LinkedIn profile.
And although she has worked for the DuBois school district for several years, she’s no stranger to smaller school districts, she said.Canter was a high school assistant principal in the Mifflinburg Area School District for seven years and a high school mathematics teacher for six years, according to her LinkedIn profile.
Her education background includes a master’s degree in instructional systems and a bachelor’s degree in secondary mathematics education, both from Penn State University. She also graduated from the educational leadership program from Edinboro University and the educational administration from Penn State University.
With her experience in mind, Canter said she brings a wide knowledge base, a benefit for someone assuming the role of superintendent for the Coudersport district.
“Oh my gosh, I am blessed and excited to be enmeshed in the community of Coudersport,” she said.
Canter is married, and the couple has two children.
