RIDGWAY — The Elk County Commissioners are keeping an eye on the Greentree Landfill situation.
During Tuesday’s Elk County Commissioners meeting, Commissioner Dan Freeburg said the commissioners would be meeting with representatives of the landfill Tuesday afternoon along with other local municipality representatives.
Five workers at the landfill in Kersey were doing their jobs on Feb. 9 when a pile of trash and dirt shifted, leading to a slide. Four of the workers were able to escape, but the operator of a compactor was buried under the pile. A large-scale rescue operation was put in place. Despite the rescue efforts, William Pierce, 49, of DuBois, died. After an extensive search, Pierce and the compactor were found by searchers on Feb. 11. Pierce was found still in the compactor’s cab.
In other news, the commissioners received correspondence that the City of St. Marys is submitting to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for a general National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit for an airport industrial park.
Officials said the permit is for the development of commercial and industrial lots already in place at the park, although some road improvements may be needed.
Seneca Resources Corp., is also submitting a request to the DEP, Northwest Regional Office, for a general permit. It is necessary to allow the replacement of the South Fork Straight Creek Bridge in Jones Township to move forward.
Meanwhile, Morgan Advanced Materials is applying to the DEP, Bureau of Air Quality, to renew its state-only operating permit for its Hall Avenue building in St. Marys.
Meanwhile, the commissioners approved removing former Commissioner June Sorg’s name from the county’s affirmative action plan and replacing it with Commissioner Matt Quesenberry’s name.
The commissioners also approved a fiscal year 2016-17 contract with the Alternative Living Solutions for Elk County Children and Youth Services.
The next commissioners meeting will be held at 10 a.m. March 7 at the Elk County Courthouse Annex in Ridgway.
