ERIE — A Bradford man has been indicted on federal charge of embezzling and theft of labor union assets, Acting U.S. Attorney Soo C. Song announced Tuesday.
Daniel R. Guthrie, 55, of 38 Euclid Ave., is the sole defendant in the indictment, brought forward by a federal grand jury in Erie.
The indictment indicates that Guthrie embezzled $8,189.51 from the United Steelworkers, local Union 10-0583, while he served as president of the labor organization, Song reported. Guthrie allegedly did this by making personal charges on the organization’s credit card and by paying bills using electronic bill payments from the union bank account.
If convicted, the law provides for a maximum sentence of five years in prison and/or a $250,000 fine; however, the actual sentence would be based on the seriousness of the offense and Guthrie’s criminal history, if he has any criminal history, according to Song.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Marshall J. Piccinini is prosecuting the matter on behalf of the government.
The indictment is the result of an investigation conducted by the Department of Labor, Office of Labor Management Standards.
