The final team scores haven’t always shown it this year, but the Bradford swimmers have consistently put forth strong showings in the pool.
That was once again the case on Friday as the Owls fell to DuBois by the scores of 94-63 in boys and 111-57 in girls.
Bradford’s best male swimmers actually outperformed the Beavers’ best, splitting the eight individual events and taking first place in two out of three relays. Unfortunately, a lack of healthy swimmers prevented the Owls from accumulating the necessary points.
“It’s great to see how many points the boys are able to get,” Bradford coach Chelsea Schwab said. “I mean we only had ten boys available today but they still kept the score close.”
Leading the way for the boys was Jared Schwab, who earned a quadruple for the meet (200 medley relay, 50 free, 100 back, 400 free relay).
The Bradford foursome of Schwab, Karl Gangloff, Tyler Sortore and Dan Fedak came out on top in both the 200 medley (1:50.73) and 400 free (3:38.47) relays. Gangloff and Sortore also finished with individual victories in the 100 free and 100 fly, respectively, to earn triples.
One of the highlights of the meet for Bradford was a one-two finish in the 100 back, with Schwab (56.46) and Sortore (1:02.76) coming out on top in that race.
DuBois were victorious in the 200 free relay consisting of Gaven Wolfgang, Mason Smith, Paul Brittain and Andrew Canter (1:42.45).
Canter earned a double by also winning the 200 free with a time of 1:54.31.
The Beavers’ depth allowed them to come away with the points, as seven different boys were responsible for at least one first-place finish.
The Bradford girls came away with two individual victories courtesy of Cara and Aliya Webster.
Cara won the 200 IM in a photo finish with DuBois’ Kiersten Pearce, beating her out by just 0.02 seconds for a time of 2:23.85. Aliya won the 500 free with a time of 5:42.17.
The Lady Beavers were led by the trio of Lauren Usaitis (200 medley, 50 free, 200 free relay, 100 breast), Julie Marchioni (200 medley, 100 fly, 200 free relay, 400 free relay) and Gabrielle Wayne (200 free, 100 free, 200 free relay, 400 free relay), all of whom earned quadruples.
Pearce (200 medley, 100 back, 400 free relay) and Alayna Cornelius (200 medley, 200 free relay, 400 free relay) also contributed triples.
DuBois came away with one-two finishes in the 50 free (Usaitis, Trulee Stainbrook) and 100 free (Wayne, Tori Gregory).
“It’s been tough because we’ve had a couple girls out with injuries recently,” coach Schwab said.
Overall, though, Schwab is very pleased with where her team is at with a month until the District 9 Championships are held at Clearfield.
“They’re just a tough group,” Schwab said. “They’re fighters. They’re dropping time every meet and just working hard.”
The Owls will have a quick turnaround as they travel to face Brookville on Monday at 6 p.m.
