There was no school at Bradford High School on Friday due to a water main break, but the swim team was still in action at Pitt-Bradford. The team they went up against did their own sort of ‘breaking’ in the water – only theirs involved setting records.

The Clearfield swim team broke four pool marks at UPB’s Paul C. Duke II Aquatic Center en route to victories of 114-55 and 129-36 in the boys and girls meets, respectively.

“They’re a really good team,” Bradford coach Chelsea Schwab said with a wry smile. “They’re probably the best team in the area.”

The Bison were led by Luke and Paige Mikesell, who were each responsible for setting two pool records.

The siblings broke the Duke Center’s women’s and men’s records in the 500 yard freestyle, with Paige swimming a 5:24.95 and Luke going 4:49.23 shortly thereafter. Paige would set another individual mark in the 200 IM with a time of 2:15.19.

Then – in the final event of the night – Luke led off the 400 yard free relay team that included Isaac Swanson, Tate Swanson and Chase Bietz that went 3:21.31 to cap off the meet on another historic note.

In addition to Paige Mikesell – who finished with four first-place finishes on the evening – the Lady Bison also got quadruples from Talitha Narehood (medley relay, 200 free, 200 free relay, 100 breast) and Paige Conrad (medley relay, 50 free, 100 fly, 200 free relay), as well as a triple from Raegan Mikesell (medley relay, 100 free, 400 free relay).

Bradford’s only first-place finish on the girls’ side came courtesy of Cara Webster, who won the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:06.59.

Aliya Webster was touched out by Narehood in the 200 free, missing out on first place by just 0.07 seconds.

On the boys side, the Owls’ Jared Schwab came away with two individual firsts, winning the 50 free (22.23) and 100 backstroke (55.76).

Peyton Priester (medley relay, 100 fly, 200 free relay, 100 breast) joined Luke Mikesell in earning a quadruple for Clearfield. Bietz (medley relay, 200 free, 400 free relay) and Tate Swanson (100 free, 200 free relay, 400 free relay) also earned triples for the Bison boys.

With several swimmers unavailable for the meet, coach Schwab saw an opportunity to mix up the lineup a bit.

“We’re seeing where everybody is at with regards to qualifying for districts,” she said. “They’re all looking really good. Almost everybody is going under or hitting their personal bests. They’re way ahead of where they were early on.”

The Owls will host DuBois at UPB next Friday at 4 p.m.
