KANE –– Andrew Bucheit came into Thursday night’s makeup game against Youngsville 53 points shy of 1,000 for his career.
Kane jumped out to a quick first-quarter lead and never looked back in its 84-43 victory, but after the Wolves’ 6-foot-6 center scored just six points in the first quarter, it looked like his milestone might have to occur on another night.
With the Wolves on the road the next four games, Bucheit turned it on in the second and third quarters, scoring 20 points in each frame and adding 10 in the fourth to finish with a school-record 56 points. He drained 24 shots – including one 3-pointer – and went 7-for-8 from the free throw line.
He now has 1,003 in his career, and is the eighth Kane player to accomplish the feat. He joins Andrew Gustafson, Jim Bergman, Jeffrey Kocjancic, Richard Kearney, Nels McLaughlin, Mike Gamble and John Bizzak on the Wolves’ 1,000-point list.
Bucheit’s 56 points are the most by a Kane player since all-time leading scorer Gustafson (1,756 points) scored 52 in 1991 and the most by a District 9 boys player since Johnsonburg’s Calvin Grumley scored 52 in 2006.
Davis Gardner scored seven points, while Frank Truden and Keaton Rounsville each added six for the Wolves. Levi Hendrickson scored 13 for Youngsville.
Kane, now 10-4, is back in action today at Sheffield.
