ALAMANCA, N.Y. — A free “Groundhog Day” nature hike is slated from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Feb. 2 in Allegany State Park.
The hike will begin in the parking lot of the Red House Chapel. Park naturalist Adele Wellman and Thomas LeBlanc will guide participants along the Red House Bike Path and a section of the Vader Hollow trail in search of some early signs of spring.
Those taking part will learn about how an animal knows when it’s time to get ready for hibernation, the preparation required to hibernate and the different kinds of hibernations. It is possible participants could encounter an Allegany groundhog predicting the weather for the next six weeks.
Organizers said participants should dress for the weather; bring a flashlight or headlamp, water, snack, and a sense of adventure.
