OELWEIN – Oelwein Middle School Social Studies teacher Craig Harrison said his students will be watching the inauguration ceremony today in his classroom.
“We have been talking about it and we are planning to watch it in class. Our discussion has been based around some current events, but mostly on the ideology that we have a peaceful transition of power, even though opposition parties are exchanging authority,” Harrison related.
Harrison said this will be part of the student’s current unit on government and the way it works.
“We are also discussing how appointments are made to cabinet positions. I plan to start the day with a discussion of the power of the president to pardon criminals. This should be interesting,” Harrison remarked.
He said his students have been experiencing mixed emotions about the upcoming change in government leadership.
“Some students are fearful. Others are very happy. A majority are apathetic, which is a middle school students ‘go to’ on all things real world,” he revealed.
