OLEAN, N.Y. — The Cattaraugus County Arts Council has announced the exhibit opening for Stephanie McMahon: Earthworks, at the Jamestown Community College Center Gallery in Olean from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 27.
Appetizers and beverages are served at the opening reception, which is free and open to the public. The public is invited to come view the works at the Center Gallery in the JCC College Center on exhibit through March 9.
McMahon’s paintings extract and distill her observations of a particular place. The paintings included in Earthworks reference the environment around the artist’s home in rural Alfred. In this body of work, McMahon explores an abstract language informed by the natural forms and structures that populate the landscape and the history and experiences that shaped it. Built by another artist in the early 1970’s, the property contains many outdoor sculptures and earthworks that are integrated into the terrain. The diverse topography shifts from fields and undulating hills to forests and ravines rich with fossils.
She earned a BFA from the School of Art and Design at Alfred University and a MFA in painting from the University of Texas at Austin. She is currently an associate professor of painting and drawing at NYSCC, School of Art and Design at Alfred University.
The Cattaraugus County Arts Council works in collaboration with Jamestown Community College to produce the exhibition series. The Center Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. The gallery is closed on weekends and all college holidays.
