MLK DAY: While students have today off to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the celebration is best celebrated out in the community.
Since 1994, MLK Day has been designated a national day of service, tasking people to not just remember the actions of Dr. King, but also to follow it.The Corporation for National and Community Service quoted Dr. King as saying, “Everyone can be great because everybody can serve.”
You might not be participating in an organized event today, but there are other ways to help. Help an elderly or ill neighbor with chores. Volunteer to babysit for someone you know could use a break. Write a letter to one of your legislators about a cause that is close to your heart.
Been thinking about joining the ranks as a regular volunteer at a local non-profit organization or church? Call today to offer your support.
We’re not sure if any local events are planned this year, but if any local student groups or other groups are celebrating today by lending a helping hand, send us a note. We’d love to share your example.
500 RUMMY: Any card players among our readers?
“A couple of former snow birds who find themselves wintering at the Smethport Senior Center would like to meet up with a 500 Rummy player or two for a couple of hands a month to assist in joyfully passing the cold winter months away,” center program director Jill Simms Yingling wrote to us.
“If this sounds like some hot fun to you please give the Smethport Senior Center a call,” she said.
Sounds like a fun way to pass a cold winter afternoon.
