FARM SHOW:In what year was the Butter Sculpture introduced to the PA Farm Show?
The 101st annual Pennsylvania Farm Show opens to the public today.
In honor of the event — “the largest agriculture exposition in the country,” according to the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association (PNA) — the PNA has created a couple of quizzes to get residents and visitors into the farming spirit.
The above questions is from the “Pennsylvania Farm Show Trivia Quiz.” Looking for something a little sillier? Find out “Which PA Farm Show Animal Are You?” Links to both quizzes can be found at panewsmedia.org/newspublications/quizzes.
So, when was the butter sculpture introduced? In 1991.
It’s quite a work of art, too.
On Thursday, event organizers unveiled this year’s butter sculpture, which is made from more than 1,000 pounds of the dairy product.
Sculptors Jim Victor and Marie Pelton of Montgomery County began working on the creation in mid-December.
It depicts the “Culture of Stewardship,” illustrating practices including crop management, the planting of plants and groundcover near streams, streambank fencing and manure storage. From the sculpture’s circular base, a gentle hillside rises, framed with a circle of trees and with rows of plants striping the hill.
The 101st Pennsylvania Farm Show will last through Jan. 14.
