Two Shinglehouse residents have been charged in connection with the severe burning of an infant boy last July.
Shannon Terrette, 27, of East Honeoye Street, and Daniel Terrette, 30, of Route 44 South, have both been charged from an incident about 10:30 p.m. July 12 at a residence on Route 44 South.
According to criminal complaints, the two were a couple at the time and had been fighting that night. A young child was in his car seat on the kitchen table when Shannon Terrette grabbed a pot of boiling hot water and macaroni off the stove and threw it at Daniel Terrette. However, most of the water in the pot landed on the child instead, the complaint alleges.
Police were called by Potter County Children and Youth Services when the couple took the infant to Cole Memorial Hospital in Coudersport for treatment. From Cole Memorial, the child was flown to a UPMC hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment. Police said he was severely burned, court records read.
When police searched the house, they found pieces of macaroni in the child’s seat, and the seat was still wet to the touch, court records allege.
At first, the couple had said Shannon Terrette was cooking when she tripped over the dog and spilled the pot of hot water on the child, court records read. However, some other people contacted police and said the story was not accurate, but refused to tell police how they knew that, court records read.
On Dec. 19, Shannon Terrette was interviewed at the Coudersport barracks of state police. She admitted to police that she had thrown the pot at Daniel Terrette, but said she did not realize the heat was on under the pot. She said they made up the story about the dog because they were afraid of losing custody of the child, according to the criminal complaint.
She is charged with aggravated assault, a first-degree felony; aggravated assault, a second-degree felony; endangering the welfare of children, a first-degree misdemeanor; obstructing the administration of law, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and two counts of conspiring to obstruct law enforcement, all second-degree misdemeanor.
She was arraigned Wednesday before Magisterial District Judge Kari McCleaft and released on $50,000 unsecured bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday before McCleaft.
Daniel Terrette was charged with obstruction of law enforcement and two counts of conspiring to obstruct law enforcement, all second-degree misdemeanors. He is scheduled for arraignment Feb. 3 before McCleaft.
