SMETHPORT — After considerable discussion about buying a new truck for the borough electric department now or waiting until later, Smethport Borough agreed unanimously Tuesday to make the purchase now.

With that decision made, council, on another unanimously vote, agreed to accept the low bid of $35,947.42 from Zook Motors of Kane for a 2017 Ford F-250 with a utility bed.

This truck will be bought through COSTARS, the state’s cooperative purchasing program.

Three other bids were submitted.

In other news, council has reminded borough residents that cat litter is definitely not to be placed in the garbage bags that are collected weekly at curbside.

Council also approved various appointments and reappointments to borough groups. Carl Smith was named to the Zoning Hearing Board. Reappointments included Jovanna Porter, Shade Tree Commission; Jim Herzog and Bill Miller, Hamlin Lake Park Municipal Authority; and Susan Jordan and Mary Jo Kreiner, delegate and alternate, respectively, Tax Collection Committee.    

After meeting in an executive session for 24 minutes to discuss personnel, council returned to the public agenda and transacted no further business.
