ALLEGANY, N.Y. — More discussions were held on the capital upgrades at campuses in the Allegany-Limestone Central School District during Tuesday’s school board meeting.
Superintendent Dr. Karen Geelan reported the school district has begun mapping out the project, estimated to be less than $10 million, that will involve multiple upgrades and improvements at the middle/high school on Five Mile Road and the elementary campus on Maple Avenue. Geelan said the district hopes to conduct a public referendum on the project in April to allow for an earlier start date involving construction that won’t impact students.
At a previous meeting in December, the board approved the hiring of the firms Campus Construction Management Services of Pittsford, and the architecture company, Clark Patterson Lee of Jamestown, for the project. Geelan said she recently walked through the middle/high school campus with the architects and construction management team to further access plans for that campus project.
Geelan said work at the middle/high school is expected to include energy efficient upgrades; an updated cafeteria line; sitework upgrades on the parking lots, sidewalks and athletic facilities; potentially combined middle and high school entrances; mechanical replacements of pumps and fixtures; and upgrades for the locker rooms, restrooms, gymnasium and high-use doors as well as finish work.
On a related note, Geelan said the first meeting with architect/construction management team for the elementary school will take place Friday. Work at that campus is expected to include energy efficiency upgrades; cafeteria upgrades that will include the serving line; an updated bus loop and vehicle cueing area; security features at the main entrance; and finish work. Also in the plans is replacement of the sanitary main; and replacement of rooftop units.
Bus garage work will include energy efficiency upgrades; addressing acoustical issues; and bus wash bay updates that including finish work, ventilation and trench drains upgrades.
“I want to make sure I’m getting the right word out there and making myself available … so everyone understands what we are doing and we are hearing from our constituents,” Geelan told the board. With that said, she noted the district plans to set up community meetings both in Allegany and Limestone to discuss and answer questions regarding the nature of the upgrades at the schools.
She said another step in the process will be to bring in financial professionals to discuss options for financing the project. School board president Joe Zimmer asked Geelan to keep the board posted on the project plans as they are firmed up this winter and to share the final plans as well as when work will begin.
“Of my goodness, of course,” Geelan responded.
In other business, the board approved the appointment of substitute teachers Rebecca Hahn, Bryana Baer, Katelyn Chiccino, Danielle Nugent and Erin Dempsey. Approved as substitute teacher aides were Baer and Chiccino. Also approved as a student intern was Donovan Brown from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, Pa.
