GALETON — The Friends of Lyman Run will hold a First Day Hike at 1 p.m. Jan. 1.
Organizers said the hike is for the entire family and will last about an hour. The hike will be lead by expert trailmaster Wanda Shirk, who is a lifetime member of the Friends of Lyman Run and who also had been involved for years with the Susquehanna Trail Club, Keystone Trail Association and more.
Participants should dress for the day’s weather and wear appropriate footwear for walking in the snow. Following the hike, there will be hot chocolate and hot cider at the park office. The event is free.
Meanwhile, on Jan. 11, Friends of Lyman Run will join with the Friends of the Galeton Library to show a film on the life of Gifford Pinchot, considered to the father of Pennsylvania forestry. The program will be held at 7 p.m. at the Galeton library.
The program is free of charge, but seating is limited.
Also, Winterfest will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 28.
Organizers said the event will include downhill sledding (some sleds will be provided but participants can bring their own); clinics on how to cross-country ski and snowshoe (equipment provided); ice fishing demonstrations — participants will be able to see fish underwater with the Underwater Cam; and snowmobile rides through the Daggett campground.
Hot chocolate and hot cider will be available for those taking part.
The Friends of Lyman Run is a chapter of the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation — a 501(c) 3 charitable organization dedicated to being the voice of Pennsylvania’s Parks and Forests and providing volunteer services for park/forest programs and projects. Membership information will be available at all the events.
