OLEAN, N.Y. — St. Bernard School of Bradford, Pa., captured the top eight places in the Olean Scholastic Chess Tournament to win the first place team trophy.
Ray Valeri hosted the event Saturday at Olean High School. National Master Garry Reynolds was on hand to analyze games, and Dr. Robert Ferguson directed the competition.
Top individual awards went to Gabriel “Gabe” Wyant, a fifth grade student from St. Bernard School, who won every game; Peyton Haight, also a fifth grader at St. Bernard, captured second place individual. Ties for third place included the following St. Bernard students: Andy Mangold, Cooper Haight, Luke Kerr, Tim Mulcahy and Trenton Johnson.
Jessica Wang, a fifth grade pupil at St. Bernard, finished in eighth place, and Alex Peterson, a high school student in Olean, captured ninth place. Elijah Legacy, a sophomore from Friendship Central High School, tied for 10th place along with third grader Alyssa Mangold and fifth grader Dan Taylor.
The Bradford Chess Club will not meet this week due to the Christmas holiday. Regular club matches will resume on Jan. 4.
