PORT ALLEGANY — Port Allegany Borough officials would like to remind property owners to remove snow and/or ice from their sidewalks including walks and ramps leading to crosswalks.
Port Allegany’s Borough Code states that sidewalks must be cleared of ice or snow within 12 hours of a snowstorm causing the accumulation. Sidewalks are a vital part of the community transportation system and failure to maintain sidewalks and keep them clear of snow and ice could result in injuries to pedestrians, a fine of up to $300 per offense, and billing for costs associated with the borough having the snow or ice removed.
Property owners should clear the entire width of their sidewalk down to bare pavement if possible, and should consider using salt, ice melt, sand, or cinders to help remove ice and aid in traction. A straight edge hoe, or ice chipper can also help remove areas with heavy ice or compacted snow. In addition, residents who are traveling over the holidays, or who travel throughout the winter should make arrangements to have their sidewalks cleared while they are out of town.
Officials would also like to remind residents that they are required to prominently display their street number on their house, or on a post in their yard if the house is located more than 200 feet from the road. The most important reason for residents to have their street number clearly displayed is to make it easier for emergency services personnel to find your home when responding to an emergency. The fire department, ambulance, and police all rely on these numbers when responding to requests for emergency assistance and highly visible numbers can help decrease response time. These numbers also assist public works crews when responding to issues related to public infrastructure like water or sewer systems.
High visibility street number signs are available for $15 through the Port Allegany Fire Department, order forms are available from members of the fire department, or at the borough office.
