Several fire departments were on scene for a fire at a natural gas compressor station located outside of the village of Wharton in Potter County.
Members of the Austin and Coudersport volunteer fire departments were called out to respond to reports of an explosion and fire at a natural gas compressor station owned by Williams Gas Co., and located in Wharton Township at the intersection of Elk Lick Run and Mahon Run roads around 3:15 p.m. Monday.
Austin Volunteer Fire Chief Chase Cooney said the department was on stand-by at the location, and the fire was being suppressed by company employees. Units from Coudersport had already been sent back to the station by 6 p.m.
The Roulette Volunteer Fire Department had been on stand-by in Coudersport, and were relieved when their personnel were allowed to return. Emporium Volunteer Fire Department members were being held on stand-by in Austin while units were still on-scene at the fire.
Cooney stated that firefighters did not enter the facility, and were there in case of an emergency that could not be handled by Williams employees. Local fire departments are brought in as a precaution.
There were reportedly no injuries due to the blast and subsequent fire. All personnel had been accounted for by the company.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
No further details were available as of Monday evening.
