75 YEARS AGO: In light of the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Nancy Reynolds of Bradford shared this photograph she took in April 1987 during a trip to Hawaii:
Ernie joined the U.S. Naval Reserve at the end of World War I before taking journalism courses and eventually becoming one of the most well-known war correspondents of World War II. He was shot and killed by a Japanese sniper in 1945 on an island off Okinawa.
He is buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific — aka the “Punchbowl” cemetery — in Honolulu, Hawaii. The cemetery shares the island of Oahu with Pearl Harbor.
In fact, Nancy has a relative buried in Punchbowl, Howard App of Eldred. He was killed during World War II.
Events are taking place across the nation to commemorate the anniversary.
In Pearl Harbor, 55 student musicians from our local area are today representing Pennsylvania — and the USS Pennsylvania, one of the ships under attack on Dec. 7, 1941. Students from Cameron, Elk and McKean counties traveled to the island to be part of the ceremony there.
Also, a historical presentation will be made at 7 p.m. today at the Thomas L. Kane Memorial Chapel in Kane.
Elsewhere in Pennsylvania, a tribute will be held at 12:45 p.m. today beneath the guns of the USS Pennsylvania, which are today located at the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg, which is near State College.
BB-38 gun 22 and gun 28 sit on an outside display at the museum, according to the museum’s website.
