ST. MARYS — A smokehouse and shed were a total loss in a fire Sunday evening in St. Marys.
Members of the Crystal Fire Department of St. Marys were called out at 5:40 p.m. to a fire at 204 Wendell Road, according to Fire Chief Bill Krause.
Krause explained, “The fire started in the smokehouse while the individual was smoking some meat.” The fire spread to a nearby shed.
While the cause was not immediately available, Krause said the fire was accidental. A state police fire marshal helped with the investigation.
There were no injuries, but the shed and the smokehouse were total losses, according to Krause.
“Thank God it was this time of year,” he noted, as “if it had been really dry out,” it could have been a “real mess.” While the blaze may have caused some damage to a couple of nearby trees, the fact that everything was so wet kept the fire from spreading further. “We were back in service by 6:30 p.m.,” he noted.
