KANE — Five families have been temporarily displaced from their homes after gas vapors entered the sanitary system and ended up into people’s homes, Kane Borough Manager Payne told The Era on Monday afternoon.
The incident happened around 4:30 a.m. Monday east of North Fraley Street near the Kwik Fill. Since then, Payne said the system has been vented, and the situation is under control.
“It’s a precautionary thing,” Payne said, who added the situation has since gotten under control as of around 1 or 1:30 p.m.
The families are staying in relative’s homes or at hotels, he said.
Agencies on scene included the state Department of Environmental Protection, United Refining, the borough fire department, the borough police and McKean County Emergency Management Agency.
Payne said he could not put a price tag on the incident, adding that emergency officials would remain working until Tuesday.
Payne called the emergency response excellent, saying this was his first as borough manager. Payne said he never knew such an incident would bring this many agencies on scene.
