OLD HICKORY: The Potter County Historical Society is looking for old photographs of the inside of the Old Hickory in Coudersport.
New proprietor Wasil Mauser wants them as reference tools when restoring the Victorian building, according to the society.
“Our files have a few but we know that many of the folks in the area have attended weddings, banquets, parties and other social events in the Old Hickory and may have photographs showing the interior of the rooms of the tavern, hall, tea room and other social areas,” said Dianne Caudell, the society’s librarian and genealogist.
Photographs can be dropped off at the society or mailed with a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the Potter County Historical Society, 308 N. Main St., P.O. Box 605, Coudersport, PA 16915.All photographs will be scanned in and returned.
SANTA LETTERS: The U.S. Postal Service offers a special treat at the holidays for girls and boys who hope to hear from Kris Kringle this year.
For anyone hoping to put a smile on a child’s face with a letter postmarked from the North Pole, the Postal Service has offered instructions for participating in its Letters from Santa program.
Have the child write a letter to Santa, addressing the envelope to: Santa Claus, North Pole.
When the child is not present, write a personalized response to the child. The Postal Service recommends including writing about some of the ways the child was well-behaved in 2016. Writing the response on the back of the child’s letter will not only save paper, but will also remind the child what he or she wrote.
Put the response letter in an envelope with a stamp on it addressed to the child. For the return address, write: SANTA, NORTH POLE.
Put that envelope in a larger envelope that has the correct postage and is addressed to: North Pole Postmark, Postmaster, 4141 Postmark Drive, Anchorage, AK 99530-9998. The Postal Service recommends using a Priority Mail Flat Rate envelope.
To make sure the child gets his or her letter, do this soon, as “Letters from Santa” must be received by the Anchorage, AK, postmaster by Dec. 15.
We’ll have more from the Postal Service on Thursday, when we’ll give Christmas gift-givers a few deadlines to make sure packages reach loved ones in time for the holiday.
