SLIPPERY ROCK – Wilmington raced to a 35-0 first-half lead and went on to eliminate Kane 42-0 in the PIAA Class AA football playoffs Saturday.
Spencer DeMedal rushed for 104 yards on nine carries and Cameron Marett totaled 100 yards on seven carries for the winners (12-1), who amassed 506 yards of offense.
The win was No. 300 for Wilmington head coach Terry Verrelli, a Curwensville High School graduate.
Big plays did Kane (13-1) in as the Greyhounds had 10 plays that went for at least 20 yards including five that went for touchdowns.
DeMedal caught a pair of touchdown passes from Reese Bender – a 43-yarder in the first quarter and a 39-yarder in the second quarter.
Kyle Slick opened the scoring with a 30-yard run.
Bender teamed with Colton Marett on a 20-yard TD pass. Bender tossed a 70-yard scoring pass to Bryson Verrelli. Cameron Marett closed out the scoring with a five-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Bender finished the day 8 of 11 for 227 yards.
Erik DeLong rushed for 57 yards on 14 carries for the Wolves. Reed Williams completed 11 of 25 passes for 188 yards and an interception, with Davis Gardner catching four for 66 yards.
Wilmington will play Steel Valley (13-0) in next weekend’s semifinal.
