A pair of St. Marys baseball players recently signed National Letters of Intent to continue their careers at Division I programs.
Elk Catholic’s Dan Stauffer is headed to St. Bonaventure to play under head coach Larry Sudbrook. A catcher, Stauffer hit .435 with a .580 on-base percentage with 19 RBIs as a junior and is a three-year Tri-County All-Star selection. He also hit .431 during his sophomore season.
“Dan continues a long line of successful players we have brought in from St. Marys,” Sudbrook said. “He receives and throws well and has some pop in his bat. With us graduating our starting catcher this spring, he is going to come in and compete with our two young catchers we already have for some starting time.”
Across town, St. Marys Public’s Jeff Wehler is signed to play at Youngstown State. As an infielder for the Dutch, Wehler hit .508 last spring as a junior, following up solid sophomore (.415) and freshman (.437) campaigns.
Wehler is a Tri-County/Courier-Express and Northern Allegheny League Large School all-star.
“Jeff is an athletic infielder who can flat out hit,” YSU head coach Dan Bertolini said.
“His versatility will allow him to fill any of the infield spots for us.
“We look for him to use his leadership abilities and great work ethic to get on the field early.”
Wehler’s teammate with the Dutch, Michael Beimel, recently signed with Division III St. John Fischer College.
