KANE — A program about about life in Turkmenistan will be held Wednesday at Friends’ Memorial Public Library in Kane.
From August 2015 to June 2016, Kane resident Mary Lisa Gustafson lived in the capital city of Ashgabat, where she taught English at the International University of Humanities and Development. Gustafson was selected by the U.S. Department of State to participate in this English Language Fellow Program.
At 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, she will give a presentation at the library about her recently completed fellowship in this Central Asian country. Turkmenistan, a former Soviet Bloc country, declared independence from the Soviet Union on Oct. 27, 1991. The International University of the Humanities and Development is the first English speaking institution in Turkmenistan and was established by presidential decree in May 2014.
In addition to teaching at the university, Gustafson gave presentations about American life and culture for the Ashgabat community. She also conducted teacher training classes for teachers in Kazakhstan.
