ST. MARYS — Coudersport captured its first District 9 Class A volleyball championship in 13 years Saturday.
The Lady Falcons swept A-C Valley, 25-11, 25-17, 25-16 in the finals.
Coudersport defeated top-seeded Elk Catholic 23-25, 25-20, 25-16, 26-24 in the semifinals.
“It was kind of cool,” Coudy coach Patty Wilson said. “After the final match, Maddie Smith, one of my juniors, looked over at me and said, ‘Hey, coach. It’s been 13 years since we won a crown and, this year, we are 13 strong.’
“I’m thinking she should probably handle all of my interviews.”
Pacing the Lady Falcons (20-2) were Ally Easton (21 kills, 10 blocks, 10 digs), Kiara Perkins (27 kills, 10 digs), Haley Keck (82 assists), EmmaRae Easton (14 kills, 5 blocks), Macy Gleason (14 kills, 4 blocks) and Joplin Osgood (88 digs).
“The match against Elk County Catholic was a battle,” Wilson said. “We’d get a lead and they would get back in the match.
“But my girls refused to lose focus. Every time they scored a point, it was like everyone on my team was saying, ‘we can’t change what happened on the last point. What we can do is win the next point.’
“My girls never got down on themselves or on each other. Everybody made key plays today.
“It’s been like that all season long. We’ve relied on each other. We’ve never quit on each other, always picking each other up when a mistake was made.
“And I don’t think Coudersport has ever had a better blocking team.”
The Lady Falcons will open PIAA action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at DuBois High School against District 7 third-place team Fort Cherry.
The Lady Crusaders took third place, defeating Clarion in the consolation match 19-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-23.
