RIDGWAY — As required by the state, the Ridgway Area School Board will vote next Tuesday upon a resolution to determine how much — if at all — the district can raise taxes.
The board will vote upon a resolution to limit a tax increase to the state’s index rate.
For next year, the rate for the Ridgway district was set at approximately 2.7 percent.
If the board approves the resolution, they will only be able to raise taxes by 2.7 percent. If the board rejects the resolution, they may be able to raise taxes by more than 2.7 percent but would have to do so under an expedited timeline.
Voting upon the resolution is required by the state and does not indicate whether or not the district will raise taxes.
In addition to voting upon this resolution, the board is hoping to have an update on safety concerns with the district’s gymnasium.
During the board’s regular October meeting, Janet Redmond, the Ridgway Elkers girls’ volleyball head coach, expressed concern over the volleyball net system that the district had purchased. She said the system broke and became a safety hazard for the girls as they practiced.
Redmond said one of the poles broke and could have seriously injured one of the girls if it had hit them on the way down.
The board’s safety committee reviewed the situation and is currently waiting for information from the equipment’s manufacturer.
Business Manager Donna Sidelinger said she contacted the company that sold the equipment about the issue. She said the company sent a representative to review the system by collecting a wide variety of measurements and pictures.
That representative is currently gathering information from the system’s manufacturer to determine whether the system is being used correctly and to determine what may be causing issues.
Superintendent Robert Rocco said he believes the tops of the poles are leaning in towards each other.
