ALLEGANY, N.Y. — Children and parents who want to create last-minute decorations or costume apparel for Halloween activities are welcome to stop the by Cattaraugus County Arts Council studio Sunday for the first-ever Free Family Art Day event.
The program, slated to be held from 1 to 4 p.m. in the 100 W. Main St. studio, is open to children of all age groups, said Tina Hastings, executive director of the arts council.
Hastings said arts council staff and volunteers will guide visitors through three “kid-friendly” art projects. Activities will include fall pumpkin painting, the creation of friendly animal masks as well as spooky spider webs. At the same time, adults can enjoy a fun activity of their own by creating a decorative tile with fire.
Hastings said all materials will be provided for the craft projects. In addition, visitors will be treated to fall refreshments during the afternoon.
“The Family Art Day is a new event for 2016,” Hastings explained. “The mission of the Cattaraugus County Arts Council is to promote the creation, presentation and appreciation of arts and culture.
“We wanted to create another free event that will show our community how fun it can be to create art,” she said. “No registration is required so we hope community members will take advantage of this free event.”
Hastings said the event will be followed in a few weeks by the CCAC Winter Arts Festival at the Lodge at Holiday Valley in Ellicottville from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov.19 and noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 20.
Organizers said the event will provide local artists with the ideal opportunity to sell their work to visitors who are beginning their holiday shopping.
The juried exhibition and sale are dedicated to promoting the visual fine arts, handmade goods, and artists and artisans of the region.
Arts council officials said the event has a limited number of booth spaces available at the event. The deadline to sign up is Nov. 1 and artists can register online atmyartscouncil.net.
